- Do I need to buy Kinkakuji tickets in advance?
- The temple's official site lists no advance tickets or reservations. You pay at the ticket window when you arrive: adults ¥500, primary and middle school students ¥300.
- How long does a visit to Kinkakuji take?
- The temple doesn't publish a typical visit time and we haven't timed one, so we don't give a number. Allow for the trip too: from Kitaoji Bus Terminal the bus takes about 11 minutes to Kinkakuji-michi, then it's a 5–8 minute walk. Gates are open 09:00–17:00.
- When is Kinkakuji least crowded?
- By our estimate, the first hour, 09:00–10:00, is the quietest on a normal day: 30–35 out of 100 (39 in peak season). The last hour, 16:00–17:00, comes next (34–43). In May, June, October and November, school groups add 20 points on weekday mornings (09:00–11:00), so on those weekdays go after 16:00.
- Can you go inside the Golden Pavilion?
- The temple's official site doesn't list the inside of the pavilion as open to visitors. Its guide describes the pavilion as seen across Kyoko-chi pond from the garden path.
- Can I pay by card at Kinkakuji?
- Yes, since 28 September 2026. Admission can be paid by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club) as well as cash. Before that date it was cash only, and many guides still say so. Card payment covers admission; amulets and goshuin (temple stamps) are not included.
